Yoga 4 Parkinson's Disease

Our mission is to partners with local and national organizations to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease in historically underserved communities and provide yoga classes to individuals with Parkinson’s disease so that individuals can live better lives.

In the United States, nearly one million people are living with Parkinson’s Disease. According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, Parkinson’s is the second-most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s disease, and it is expected that by 2030, nearly 1.2 million individuals will be living with Parkinson’s Disease. This slowly progressive disease impacts the central nervous system and is characterized by slow and decreased movements, muscular rigidity, instability and in some cases, resting tremor.

While there is no cure currently for Parkinson’s disease, research, including a 2007 study from the University of Virginia, indicates that Yoga improves gait, function and balance. Despite the lifestyle changes and mental health challenges associated with Parkinson’s disease, research studies at Cornell University suggest that Yoga, “lessens symptoms associated with anxiety, depression and fatigue.”

Yoga 4 The World offers a program that will assist and support individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Our Yoga 4 Parkinson’s disease Initiative partners with local and national organizations to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease in historically underserved communities and provide yoga classes to individuals with Parkinson’s disease so that individuals can live better lives.
